Dogs and Cats do not have the same nutritional needs. Cats are carnivores and Dogs are omnivores.

Cats are obligate carnivores, dogs are less obligate carnivores (not omnivores). I can see how starches are much worse for cats, since they are not genetically made to process starches and such a diet would make them prone to diabetes.

Question:
I have been looking for a starch-free diet for my cat that contains DL-Methionine, and is free of Menadione Sodium Bisulfite. I don't feel comfortable feeding my cat a diet that is appropriate for dogs, and vice versa.

I can see how it would be economical for a supplier to just make one food for both, kind of like the bra manufacturers making so-called "e-z size" bras that only have ONE size instead of two measurements, but they fit no one well - there is a reason a bra has TWO measurements (band and cup) - it is certainly cheaper to make 5 sizes instead of 40 combination sizes, but they fit almost no one properly, or comfortably.

Dogs and cats are different species with different diets and nutritional requirements. They are not only not the same Species (C. lupus vs F. catus), they are not even the same Genus (Canis vs Felis). In fact, they are not even the same Family (Canidae vs Felidae). While it's true they both eat flesh - the meats they eat are different, and the dog can digest things that the cat cannot, and few dogs are fond of fish.

They are just different with different nutritional needs and one or the other of them will be getting something they shouldn't or missing something they need, if they are eating identical diets.

Cats go for the organs first, then the muscle and bone - they don't go for the leftover parts (that we didn't eat) ground up into a "meal."

Cats might get lucky and eat salmon, but they certainly could never catch a tuna! or a deer, or a cow! Why do we feed them the left-over waste products from animals that WE eat??

Cat food should have what THEY eat: mouse, rat, rabbit, insects (grasshopper, beetle, termites, grubs, etc. - all good protein), minnows, crayfish - things they would REALLY catch and eat, not our waste from animals that WE eat. Perhaps their own REAL diet would provide everything they need.

Question:
Your article reads "Companies who attempt to demonize grains (corn, wheat, etc.) and soy omit the fact that the meats they use come from animals fed primarily corn and soy. Even organic chickens are fed this diet. Since an animal cannot be something better than the food it eats, it is misleading to claim the demerits of soy, corn, etc. and then use meat products raised on them."

With all due respect carnivores eat different things because they have different physiology. What you have hear is like saying cows eat grass and hay and since they are no better than what they eat its ok to feed your dog grass? Since we all know dogs dong eat grass for food we should not use beef raised on grass. Please use good science and logic not the same advertising "rationalizations" as the vet food companies. Different digestive systems will process different carbohydrates differently you know that yet you say something so biologically incorrect????

I am so disappointed.. I use some of your holistic products and now I wonder if that's just as much bad info?
