Raw

Question:
Hi, I received my recent order for archetype and nurture, and my cats are crazy about them! However, I notice the warning about raw meats on the package and have concerns about feeding to my fiv + cat. I know raw meats can contain pathogens that his weakened immune system may not be able to fight off, but does tnt processing remove these risks? Also, does it need to be refrigerated?

Answer:
Yes you can feed any of the Wysong diets, including the raw diets to a FIV positive cat. Since the food is considered a raw food, we are required by government agencies to put a raw food safety disclaimer on the bag.

Wysong raw diets are shelf stable at room temperature, but the shelf life can be prolonged if refrigerated., or best, frozen

Question:
Ok, I'm really confused. I just found this on his vet's website:

NO RAW FOODS
There are currently numerous fad diets involving raw foods for pets. It is crucial that one not succumb to these popular recommendations when it comes to the FIV+ cat. Uncooked foods, meats especially, can include parasites and pathogens that a cat with a normal immune system might be able to handle but an FIV+ cat might not. Stick to the major reputable cat food brands.

He has also been vomiting today, so maybe best not to risk it with the tnt processed raw food. Does wysong have a cooked food made from high-quality meat that he can try?

Answer:
Due to Wysong's highly concentrated, unique, natural nutritional formulation, animals that have been previously fed a commercial diet often have lower concentrations of the necessary digestive enzymes and probiotics needed to digest a more natural diet, such as Wysong, sometimes causing digestive upset in the beginning. It often takes time for their digestive tracts to rebuild these natural digestive tools. Patience is the key. Some animals take longer to adjust than others, which can be up to a month or more.

For help on transitioning to Wysong please follow this link to the Learn Section on the Wysong website: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/how-to-transition-to-wysong.php.

As an alternative, you could try the Epigen products which are not raw.

If you wish to try other high meat/protein foods, we would recommend the new Epigen™ (chicken, fish, venison and Epigen 90™) and the Au Jus™ canned diets.

If you are looking to boost the immune system of your cat, also consider Immulyn™ (supports immune health), as well as our Foundation Formulas, Wysong Salad™ (contains beneficial sulforaphanes found in cruciferous vegetables) and Wysong Wild Things™ (antioxidant fruits and vegetables).

Question:
I'm trying to assess a raw diet for my dog and cats. Your website is very verbose, but for all the volume of words, you omit some really key information. That means I've spent an inordinate amount of time reading a lot of the same things over and over without finding what I need.

Here are a couple things I need to know:

1) You sell by weight but give feeding guidelines by volume. That makes it completely impossible for a customer to estimate cost. I understand that volume may vary a bit from package to package since they are packed by weight, but obviously that averages out quickly and you could easily tell us, on average, what a cup of each type of food weighs. I would like that information for Archetype and Archetype buffet so I can estimate how many packages per day I would have to buy.

2) Here: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/feeding-amount-guidelines.php you say a 50lb animal should get three Archetype Burgers patties per day. Here:

http://www.wysong.net/products/labels/ARCHBURG.pdf you say the same animal should get two patties per day. That's an enormous difference.

Something like that takes a huge toll on your credibility. Which one is the error?

3) Ultimately what I'm trying to find out is how much of each of the raw diets I'll need for my animals. Maybe you can just tell me, which would simplify things:

Toby: Dog. Siberian Husky. 64 lbs. 4 years old. Healthy.

Smudge: Cat. American Shorthair. 9 lbs. 4 years old. Healthy.

Bear: Cat. American Shorthair. 12 lbs. 4 years old. Healthy.

Plus some more feedback:

1) You push your website visitors into this "Personal Recommendations"

process, but all it spits out at the far end is a uselessly generic list of foods for that kind of animal. It's a good concept, but you put so little effort into implementing it that it's just another waste of time. For example if you asked about weight, activity level, and perhaps owner's nutritional goals and concerns, then you could actually make a meaningful and useful recommendation and maybe even help a pet owner set priorities for their pet food concerns. What a wasted opportunity.

2) With all the varieties, where is the comparison chart? The descriptions of each type of food are so skewed to flowery marketing nonsense that it's very difficult to understand the differences among the products. It's obvious to you all, you work for Wysong. For the rest of us, it's just a bunch of product names that we need to sort out for ourselves. A little help here?

So, "Wysong products, and especially our information, make it easy to be healthy and fit because true health comes from an informed mind. "

is a nice warm fuzzy bit of cliché marketing speak, but the website isn't living up to it. Less hype, more unadorned information. If the products are really that good, let the facts speak for themselves.

"5. Q: Does this make you different from other companies?

A: We think so. For most companies the emphasis is on marketing. "

Cough...

Sorry to be so critical, but I was really hoping to get solid factual help from your site, and instead I left more confused than ever, and disgusted by the lack of respect for your customers' ability to think for themselves. I still think your product may be the best thing for my animals, but I was closer to choosing Wysong BEFORE I visited your site than I am now.

Answer:
PLEASE READ THIS PREFACE TO THE ANSWERS WE HAVE PREPARED FOR YOU

Thank you for your inquiry. We assume that you have come to us seeking our expertise, experience, and perspective. We will tell you what we believe you need to know to achieve health, since health is, and always has been our objective.

Please keep in mind that we have been producing nutritional products under Dr. Wysong's direction for over 35 years. We personally use these products and they have been consumed by hundreds of thousands of humans, and animals through a number of generations with remarkable results. Some pets, for example are now into their late twenties on Wysong products—an almost unheard of health accomplishment.

Also understand that no manufactured product is as good as the healing forces within nature. Thus, such products are always a compromise. But Wysong tries to compromise the least. If you want to reach more toward perfection, do as Dr. Wysong has always advocated (see: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-nutrition-publications.php), home prepare your own using the information Wysong provides. See Optimal Health Program™: http://www.wysong.net/wohp/.

If you take issue with our products and ask that we ignore our actual 35 years of experience in nutritional science, processing technology, and actual feeding (see testimonials: http://www.wysong.net/testimonials.php), please provide the scientific information (not mere anecdote or experiment using unrealistic doses and/or laboratory animals) proving that Wysong products, or ingredients in our products at the levels included in our products, are not effective and healthful.

We understand consumers are confused at first by our information, the array of products, and the lack of specific direction, i.e., your pet needs X diet, fed at exactly Y amount at every meal. The verbosity you refer to explains why this is so, and why people should feed their pets more like they do themselves--with variety and rotation.

The cost of feeding Wysong depends upon many factors, including which foods you feed, how you rotate them, the activity level and size of your pets. If you have reviewed our information you will see that we do not advocate feeding any one food exclusively. For this reason, and the fact that pets do not need every nutrient at a precise level in every meal, we do not place an emphasis on precise dosages of food. The "verbosity" you note is because it is very difficult to communicate this concept to a public brainwashed with "100% complete" pet food propaganda. It is not marketing, as you clam, since if people were to follow our advice exactly they would feed no packaged foods, even ours.

The price for each product is listed on each respective product page on the Wysong website. You can find our feeding guidelines here: feeding guidelines. The feeding guidelines are a good place to start (feed based upon your pet's current weight), and then adjust accordingly. Remember that the guidelines are based upon averages; you will need to adjust them to meet the needs of your pet, depending on biochemical individuality, activity level, age, breed and so forth.

The Archetype™ bag contains approximately 5 cups of food, the Archetype Buffet™ bag contains approximately 13 cups of food, and there are 8 burgers in each canister of Archetype Burgers™.

Question:
I have been looking into raw diets for my 2 dogs (rat terrier & beagle) and I am trying to get a better handle on the benefits. I have seen a lot of websites stating why raw diets are better but many of them are lacking scientific proof. I am looking for some solid information that shows what is destroyed in a dog food by traditional processing, I am especially interested in enzymes. Does the book you sell through your site "The truth about pet foods" contain any type of studies? I would like to know more about the book and would like to know if you have any information about raw diets vs traditional diets for dogs.

Answer:
Thank you for your recent e-mail. Yes, the Truth About Pet Foods book does contain information about raw diets/feeding. You might also go on-line and obtain a copy of Pottenger's Cats which contains raw diet studies.

Further, concerning feeding raw diets, when following the natural model, there really isn't anything to test or research. Animals in the wild have survived (and thrived) for eons eating raw, whole prey. Cooking food is the novelty that needs proof. Also, the numerous health problems plaguing pets today were not prevalent until pet owners started feeding processed foods to their pets exclusively (the last 50 years or so).
