Question:
Wysong mentions in its response to Nature's Logic claims (http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/no-vitamin-mineral-processed-foods.php) that NL purportedly adds protease enzymes to its foods that hydrolyze proteins. Thus, according to their logic, their own foods would be laced with MSG. Unfortunately I can't find any Protease enzymes in their products. Can you let me know which of their products carry Protease enzymes?

Answer:
A quick search on their website reveals protease listed at the bottom of the dry diet pages.

Also keep in mind that the body hydrolyzes proteins with acid and proteases as a normal part of digestion.

Question:
Thanks for your reply. I managed to locate Nature's Logic Protease - found in their product Canine Beef Meal Dinner Fare. If the enzyme Protease causes MSG, what about other enzymes like lipase, alpha amylase, cellulase? Will they cause MSG?

Answer:
We do not agree with the MSG information from NL. We only point out that they do not understand biochemistry or food processing or what is or is not toxic, since the very thing they condemn would, by their logic, be in their products.

Question:
I noticed you use Thiamine Mononitrate and Vitamin A Acetate in your Archetype.

Nature's Logic uses all natural vitamins and informed that Synthetic Vitamin A can also cause proliferative gingivitis, incisor exfoliation, thin mandibles, bone changes and depleted cartilage matrix.

I have found from the internet that Thiamine Mononitrate is a fat-soluble Synthetic Vitamin B1 that cannot do the work of Thiamine. All B-vitamins are water-soluble.

Companies not using synthetic vitamins - Nature's Logic, Carna4, Aunt Jeni's Home Made, Oma Pride, well Fed Dogs - to name a few. If they can do it, why can't Wysong?

I have read on the Nature's Logic site that the vitamins and minerals in pet foods are toxic. Why do you add them to your food.

Answer:
This claim is marketing to try to set themselves apart from others. There is no evidence that the millions of doses of supplements consumed by humans and animals every day cause harm. There is, on the other hand, tens of thousands of scientific and clinical papers and research proving the exact opposite. If such fortification was harmful or unnecessary, why would the entire pet food industry, other than this one marketing company, do it?

Please note this quote from one of Dr. Wysong's books, "You can find articles about how this or that vitamin is toxic or worthless. However, all such reports, upon analysis, are based upon poor science and manipulation of data. This bias in the popular media against supplements is fostered by the medical and pharmacological Industries that wish the public to be dependent upon them. They see self care and supplementation as a threat to their economic success. The media, supported by huge advertising dollars from Big Pharma, omits the very real fact that modern health care is the number one killer. At the same time, there is not one indisputable death caused by the consumption of supplements taken at appropriate levels in either humans or animals."

There are over sixty billion doses of vitamins taken by people every year, yet not one fatality. There are about 160 million pets (dogs, cats, horses, birds) in the US eating vitamin and mineral fortified foods about twice per day, not including the supplements given to animals in addition to their fortified foods, the doses to animals would be over 112 trillion every year. Yet not one fatality as a result!

The ability of any company to market products based upon the opposite to these facts speaks to the power of mythology.

Thanks for your reply on synthetic vitamins & Nature's Logic matters. Regarding your previous reply on synthetics – "Some vitamins are naturally occurring in the meats, but those added are produced synthetically or through fermentation, as are all vitamin supplements and fortifiers. Minerals are naturally occurring from mined sources and are not synthetically made.****"

Please note that proteinates are synthetic minerals. Sodium Carbonate is synthetic mineral made by a process called Solvay from salt and limestones.

Thiamine Mononitrate is fat soluble and will build up in the body. Excessive amount will cause liver damage.

Answer:
We were referring to the mineral itself, iron, calcium, zinc, etc. These are not synthetically made. However, as you say, they can be synthetically complexed. In the case of proteinates, these are more effective forms of the isolated mineral with considerable scientific proof substantiating that. (Do an Internet search on benefits of proteinates") We do not use "sodium carbonate" (soda ash), nor do other manufacturers that we know of.

Excesses of anything can cause toxicity. But there is no evidence whatsoever that vit-min fortification at proper doses in pet foods have caused any disease or deaths. This is only a marketing ploy.

There is, however, plenty of evidence that processed foods without fortification produce disease and death.
