OtisolQuestion:I'm writing re: your otisol products, as I'm interested in treating my cats' ear issues in a holistic fashion, particularly my FIV+ foster kitty whose ear "infection" (confirmed on culture) just about cleared using Zymox for ~10-14 days. That was months ago, and I barely see her scratch but there's still gunk there and every once in a while a *little scratching. It seems crazy to give hardcore antibiotics (not to mention spend $200+ on vet services in NYC to culture and prescribe and examine) for such a mild condition. In short the mongraph on ear issues makes PERFECT sense to me and the approach seems awesome. (Also, I have loved a number of other products from you guys (F Biotic being the clearest results; just tried inoculant last day or two and nothing to complain about there yet either). We'll see if DentaTreat helps my stink-mouth Tortie or not!) HOWEVER: I won't order these 2 ear products (or the shampoos) for my kitties bc I've heard from many sources that CATS SHOULDN'T BE EXPOSED TO ESSENTIAL OILS. Period. I see nothing in the monograph disputing that. (Natural health folks often use "hydrosols" on cats, however.) Thoughts? PS--Please do not give me any disclaimer on how your advice is not the advice of a veterinarian. Unless an actual vet responds, well--no kidding sherlock! I full understand that already. I'm asking whether someone KNOWLEDGABLE on CATS can respond re: why THIS product is labelled for cats, and why these essential oils are considered safe. Answer:
PLEASE READ THIS PREFACE TO THE ANSWERS WE HAVE PREPARED FOR YOU Thank you for your inquiry. We assume that you have come to us seeking our expertise, experience, and perspective. We will tell you what we believe you need to know to achieve health, since health is, and always has been our objective. Please keep in mind that we have been producing nutritional products under Dr. Wysong's direction for over 35 years. We personally use these products and they have been consumed by hundreds of thousands of humans, and animals through a number of generations with remarkable results. Some pets, for example are now into their late twenties on Wysong products—an almost unheard of health accomplishment. Also understand that no manufactured product is as good as the healing forces within nature. Thus, such products are always a compromise. But Wysong tries to compromise the least. If you want to reach more toward perfection, do as Dr. Wysong (see: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-nutrition-publications.php)has always advocated, home prepare your own using the information Wysong provides. See Optimal Health Program™: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/wysong-optimal-health-program.php. If you take issue with our products and ask that we ignore our actual 35 years of experience in nutritional science, processing technology, and actual feeding (See Testimonials: http://www.wysong.net/testimonials.php), please provide the scientific information (not mere anecdote or experiment using unrealistic doses and/or laboratory animals) proving that Wysong products, or ingredients in our products at the levels included in our products, produce harm in any way. We have had no adverse reports from the use of Otisol™ or Otisol-O™, even though these products have been used on thousands of animals, including cats, for several decades. That is the evidence we can provide to you. As noted above, however, we welcome any scientific proof of harm from our products used as directed. Question: Thanks for the quick reply! I'm sure clearly traceable immediate reactions can be ruled out after all these years--but hearing that is reassuring nonetheless. I would like to be able to use these products because Wysong generally has great stuff and it's hard to find trustworthy holistic ear treatments. Please see the following case reports and scientific evidence of tea tree oil's toxicity to cats here, as well as a retrospective study of adverse events from federally exempt flea products containing "mixtures of essential oils" (pulled from the ASPCA poison control center database) here. How can we know that the essential oils used in these Wysong products are safe for frequent use, and do not have long-term toxicity? What are the dosages of each oil in the Otisol products? How does this compare to the dosages in the problematic flea products? Are there exceptions to the "no essential oils for cats" rule--are some safe? Have Wysong scientists established a "safe" threshold of tea tree oil in particular? Was there premarketing (or laboratory) testing of this particular mixture? Answer:
Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Yes, our products and their ingredients were tested on animals before release. Decades of their use also give us assurance. As noted in the previous, anything can be toxic and biochemical individuality also comes into play in terms of sensitivities. See: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/toxin-paranoia.php. We offer these product as an alternative to the much more likely toxicities of conventional medications, but there are no guarantees with anything, natural or not. One can only test on their individual animal, observe, and go from there. Question: I was surprised to find in the ingredients of Otisol-For Topical Use Only - Some known ingredients that in particular are toxic to Cats. I refer to Aloe Vera and Eucalyptus. Also the use of Essential Oils in general, as well since they by nature are an absorbent when exposed to tissue and cannot in cats be metabolized and cause toxic reactions in the renal system. Absorption by skin is not as effective as absorption via ingestion but non the less still an avenue into the metabolic ycle. Suggestion: There should be some sort of "Heads Up" label on your site referring to these well established toxic substances as being included in your product. That way the buyer can decide if "Any" amounts of these substances or base stocks can and will cause harm and stay clear of this product regardless of whatever reason Wysong my have regarding the inclusion of these toxic substances in this or other products they may sell. With that said, this is just science. Wysong may justify the use of these substances and substances like these, in their various products, and in their perspective forms of use, but that use is based on a subjective interpretation of the science involved and not one of an objective adherence to the sciences involved. Answer:
In response to your concern, please see the following link: So you think Wysong uses toxins in its products. For additional information see these links: Toxin Paranoia: http://www.wysong.net/pet-health-and-nutrition/toxin-paranoia.php 100 Pet Health Truths Newsletter: http://www.wysongpethealth.net/ Truth About Pet Foods: http://www.wysong.net/products/cat-dog-health-nutrition-truth-about-pet-foods.php For greatest health Dr. Wysong recommends following the Optimal Health Program, which includes supplements, rotating through the various Wysong diets (dry, canned and non-thermally processed), and whole fresh foods to provide healthy variety. |
